Let’s take a look at the top seven features of the Helio G90 and G90T and why should be excited about it if you’re into mobile games.
CPU Architecture
The G90 and G90T are based on the 12nm manufacturing process and are clocked at up to 2.05GHz. The G90 has two powerful Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2GHz and six power-efficient Cortex A55 cores also clocked at 2GHz. The G90T, on the other hand, gets an ever-so-slight boost in terms of clock speed and has two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.05GHz while the six Cortex-A55 cores remain at 2GHz. The CPU does seem really powerful on paper especially with those A76 cores giving it a major boost.
Powerful GPU
Both the G90 and G90T come with ARM Mali-G76 GPU with the G90 getting a clock speed of 720MHz and the G90T getting 800MHz. For reference, this is the same cluster of GPU used on high-end chipsets like the Kirin 980. However, the one used on the G90T is a quad-core GPU while the one on the Kirin 980 is a 10-core cluster. Nevertheless, this does mean that graphic performance is one of the key highlights of this SoC and one can expect a smooth gaming experience.
Cameras up to 64MP
We recently saw brands like Xiaomi and Realme tease their upcoming 64MP camera smartphones, and they could very well be sporting the new Helio G90T as the triple ISPs allow for a max resolution of 64MP for a single lens and 24+16MP for dual lenses. The G90, on the other hand, supports camera sensors of up to 48MP for a single lens while the dual camera support remains unchanged.
Better and Faster AI
The G90 series has a dedicated APU or AI Processing Unit, that too two of them to help with faster AI performance. The dual APU is clocked at 750MHz on both devices and when combined with the CPU and GPU, up to 1 TeraMacs performance can be achieved on devices with the Helio G90. The chips can also support dual wake-up words which is a first for mobile chipsets.
More RAM and Storage
While the G90 has support for up to 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM clocked at 2133MHz, the G90T takes it up a notch and has support for up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM. Both phones also have support for UFS 2.1 and eMMC 5.1 storage. No UFS 3.1 support here.
Smooth 90Hz Display
The Helio G90 has support only for up to a 60Hz display panel, but the G90T gets support for displays with refresh rates up to 90Hz which makes it extremely compelling for gaming purposes. A higher refresh rate means a smoother display which plays an essential role while gaming since it’s a visual treat and the interaction with the display which performing intensive fast-paced battles during games is much better than a conventional 60Hz panel.
HyperEngine Game Technology
The HyperEngine Game Technology announced by MediaTek adds some enhancements to various aspects of the phone that further improve the gaming performance of the device. Here are a few ways in which it can make a difference while gaming – Networking Engine – The Network Engine can detect if your Wi-Fi is unstable or has lower speeds and can either switch to LTE or use both concurrently to boost up speeds. Rapid Response Engine – Touch sensitivity and detection plays a major role while gaming and the Rapid Response Engine address that and tries to improve the response time. Resource Management Engine – This allocates the required amount of CPU and GPU power to the game you are running and keep the rest of the activity on the phone to a bare minimum in order to enhance the gaming experience. Picture Quality Engine – This brings HDR10 support on smartphones with an HDR10-capable display which results in much better colors. Dual Wi-Fi Connection – As the name suggests, you can connect your device to two different routers or to the two different bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz) at the same time to help switch seamlessly between both if one of them is facing downtime. This also helps in reducing latency. Call and Data Concurrency – You would’ve observed on your current smartphone that a lot of times, your mobile data stops working while on a call which cuts you off from the game you are playing. With this engine, that issue seems to be fixed. These were a few of the interesting factors that the new MediaTek Helio G90 and G90T bring to the table. The chipsets, when available commercially will compete against the Snapdragon 730G which is Qualcomm’s answer to mid-range gaming chipsets. At the launch, Xiaomi confirmed that they will be one of the first brands to offer the Helio G90/G90T chipsets on their smartphones in India, and it would be interesting to see if the 64MP camera smartphone they have been teasing does end up launching with this chipset, or if Xiaomi is going to have a new line-up of gaming smartphones in the country. We have seen Realme also using MediaTek chipsets in the past quite soon after their commercial launch, so it’s very likely that we might see a smartphone from Realme too with this new chipset.
